This little tour of a lesser-known part of the UK involved, dad (right on the picture, 79-year-old John Chatten), lad (centre – 57-year-old Nick) and lad’s lad (Nick’s son, Ollie 25). Three generations of the same family enjoying a two-wheeled mini adventure. Nick tells us all about it…
Timeless allure
In May, we set off on a thrilling adventure through the picturesque Purbecks on our vintage Lambrettas. This was no ordinary journey; it was our “Three Generation Tour of the Purbecks” – a testament to our shared passion for scootering and the timeless allure of these classic machines.
The adventure begins: Day 1
We set out nice and early from Essex on the Tuesday morning, thinking it would be a breeze to get to Dorset for lunchtime. Sadly the Dartford River Crossing had other ideas which led to a delay of 1.5 hours waiting to cross.
Upon our arrival at the campsite we unpacked, set up and couldn’t wait to get going… Our adventure was a reunion of sorts, bringing together members of both the Fourways Scooter Club in Swanage and the Poole Inner Circle.
Based near the historic and stunning Corfe Castle, it gave a perfect backdrop for our escapades. This trip marked our second visit to the Purbecks, following an October tour with just Ollie and me. The incredible experience we had last time made us decide to include three generations this time, and we were not disappointed.
We had decided our first port of call would be Poole Bike Night, a huge festival of everything two wheels and set along the Quayside, we got a few admiring glances as we drove in and parked up but I’m still not sure if that was because of the three Lambrettas collectively, or my dad’s Series 3 that was emitting blue smoke and lots of it due to a perished crank seal, I’d like to think the latter…
Perfect weather and perfect company: Day 2
The weather was on our side all three days, offering clear skies and sunshine throughout our journey, so Ray Bray & the members of Fourways Scooter Club had planned a day scaling the heights of the Purbecks, finishing at the peak with a pasty and a pint… now that’s my kind of day!
Camaraderie
While we faced a few breakdowns and mishaps, including the fastest Lambretta rear wheel change known to man (2mins 50secs) by Ollie, the spirit of the scooter community shone brightly. When we got to the Square & Compass I jokingly said to one of the members (Chris Frost) ‘How long would it take to fix that smoking series 3?’, he surprisingly replied ‘I can do that today’, I thought he was joking but not Chris, he got home, checked if he had the parts to do it and the scooter was dropped off to be repaired. I’m pleased to say it is back in Essex with my Dad and really is like a new scooter, it just goes to show with the support and camaraderie of our fellow scooter enthusiasts, we overcame every obstacle and had a fantastic time.
It was heartwarming to see how the scooter community came together, turning potential setbacks into opportunities for bonding and fun and if you’re wondering, the pasty was THE best I’ve ever had and I’ve had a few.
Adventures and mishaps: Day 3
No adventure is complete without its challenges. During our tour, we encountered a puncture, a broken front mudguard, a falling off, and a sheared dust cover in the flywheel casing. Despite these issues, our spirits remained high. Special thanks go to Kev Bell of Velocity Scooters, whose prompt help and readily available parts were invaluable in keeping us on the road. Kev’s shop is a gem, and his and Charlie’s assistance were crucial in ensuring our trip continued smoothly.
Exploring The Purbecks and beyond
Our journey took us to some of the most beautiful and interesting spots in the area. We made trips to Swanage, Bournemouth, and Poole, enjoying the scenic routes and the charm of these coastal towns, we also discovered two fantastic cafes in Poole: the ultra-cool S Bomb and the equally impressive Bravery just around the corner. Both spots offered great food, a relaxed atmosphere, and a perfect setting to unwind and reflect on our adventures, not to mention the toasted sandwiches & tea!
Unparalleled hospitality
The hospitality we received from the members of Fourways Scooter Club and the Poole Inner Circle was nothing short of extraordinary. They welcomed us with open arms, ensuring we felt at home and part of their community. Their warmth and generosity were the highlights of our trip, creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Looking forward
As we look back on our Three Generation Tour of the Purbecks, we are filled with gratitude and joy. This trip was more than just a ride; it was a celebration of family, friendship, and the enduring spirit of the scooter community. We have already started planning our next adventure, eager to explore new places and create more unforgettable memories.

We can’t wait to return and continue our exploration of the beautiful Purbecks and beyond, we’ve also arranged a trip to North Norfolk for four days in August so again the invitation is extended to anyone local who fancies joining us.
