Lambretta rider, Mike Hayman does the Druidale water splash at the Isle of man in the 1970s.

ScooterNova Magazine and SLUK are pleased to announce that we have two fabulous guest speakers booked for ScooterExpo on 21 May that are sure to have you enthralled.

In the Lambretta corner, we have Mike Hayman, whose first scooter at the age of 16 was his father’s old Lambretta LD. A founder member of the Eastbourne Vulcans SC, Mike recalls watching Ron Moss racing at Crystal Palace, the man who inspired him to go scooter racing. Shopping at Royspeed as a teenager, Mike’s first race was in 1971. Competing on the mainland and over in the Isle of Man, Mike later joined Team Taffspeed alongside Bob West and the legendary Frankland brothers.

Mike also produced a hydraulic front disc brake and brought that to race meetings in the 70s. He still has the first one he ever made, a forerunner to the aftermarket units many of us use today.

To Disc 85

Away from the circuit, Mike began working for Two Four Accessories in Croydon, the company owned by Peter Agg that imported Lambretta scooters into the UK. A certain Arthur Francis was his manager there. Two Four became Suzuki GB who later imported Vespa scooters into the UK. Mike was after sales manager and has plenty of tales to tell about both marques. He was also the person behind the original concept of the Disc 85 event for Vespa UK.

Norrie Kerr

In the Vespa corner is the legendary Norrie Kerr who started his life on two wheels north of the border in 1966 on a Vespa 152L2. A member of Glasgow Vespa Club and already a competitive rider in Scottish scooter sport, he began venturing south in 1971 to compete in road trials in England as well as on the Isle of Man too.

Scooter & Scooterist

Norrie launched Scooter & Scooterist magazine in 1972, which he produced at home and was the only publication of its kind through the 70s. It ran until 1986. He moved down to Nottinghamshire in the late 70s and spent a year working for Douglas Vespa before opening Midland Scooter Centre with his friend and Lambretta racer Dave Webster. Norrie continued his success on the race track, promoting MSC along the way, with scooters such as his 121cc LC1 smallframe. He left MSC in 1989 and today runs VE UK, the scooter parts distribution company and co-sponsor of ScooterExpo 2.

Both guests will be speaking at ScooterExpo 2 in the side room adjacent to the bar in hall 1. All are invited to attend and listen to their scooter tales from over the decades and answer any questions you may have (exact times will be confirmed at a later date).

When is it?

ScooterExpo 2 takes place on Sunday 21 May 2023 at Alfreton Leisure Centre in Derbyshire, a conveniently central location in the country for many. The exhibition will include up to 100 of the finest classic and custom scooters from over the decades, including a couple of new custom scooters being unveiled for the very first time. There will also be a selection of traders promoting brands and products, along with items for sale.
