SIP have updated their elegant 13″ Vespa GTS rims. As with previous versions, the MK III rims are 100% made in Germany and type-approved for use on the road.
The latest version of the rims is available in four finishes: matt black, gloss black, gloss black with polished spokes and gold. They retail at £136.25-£139.05 (Plus VAT and import duty if buying directly from SIP). Of course, you can also order or buy them from UK SIP stockists, such as VE UK or most decent scooter shops. Larger wheels will improve stability and handling.
Fit and ride
With modern Vespa customisation being ever more popular standing out from the crowd is important. SIP’s 13″ rims add a touch of glass to your Vespa GTS/GTV and unlike using MP3 13″ rims, these are designed for the GTS so will fit straight on without machining or the need for a spacer.
The MK III rims have a new style with two five-fold patterns of single and double spokes that give maximum stability and strength, as recognised by the KBA who gave approval for use on the front and rear. General type approval was also granted by the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
Tyre sizes
The rims are suitable for all tyres that fit beneath the mudguards and covers of the GTS, including: 110/70-13, 120/70-13, 130/60-13, 130/70-13, 140/60-13. When using a 140/60-13 (in some countries) a tyre approval from the manufacturer must be submitted (SIP provide tyre approvals in the downloads section of their website).
Gear ratios
It’s worth noting g that changing tyre/rim size will affect the gearing of your scooter and will alter the accuracy of your speedo. All original GTS speedos are out by up to 10%, using a larger section 140 tyre on 13″ rims can actually make your speedo more accurate.
