Royal Alloy has showcased some new models at the huge Beijing Motorcycle Exhibition in China today – including the Lambretta Series 1 style ‘JPS’ that we showed renderings of recently.
Badged as a 150 for the domestic market, this one will arrive in the UK later this year as a 125 and 310cc.
The Emperor’s New Clothes?
I’m a Lambretta fan and Series 1 owner myself, and I’m not going to get upset because RA have remade one of the most classic scooter designs of all time. The Royal Alloy JPS is more ‘Lambretta’ looking than the NEW Lambretta models, and imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Die Hards
Looking at it visually in a non-blinkered way, you’ve got to admit they’ve done a good job with this one and the paintwork wouldn’t look out of place on a show-winning custom Lambretta – especially in the black and gold JPS livery. It even comes ‘rally ready’ with a black sprint rack for your luggage.
Aside from the age-old ‘Born Agains’ and ‘Comedy Mods’ arguments we see on various posts and pages (there will be plenty on this one on the social feeds), people love a retro scooter with a modern twist. I also know a few die-hard Lambretta riders who also own Royal Alloys because they want something quick and reliable for longer rides, especially as old age creeps in.
Never say never.
By next year, we’ll be seeing loads of these Series One clones at every scooter event in the country, you mark my words…
Grand Prix E400P
Based on their existing GP model, the new E400P is the first electric RA and the 400 in its name denotes that it makes power comparable to a conventional 400cc petrol engine. The stats are 25kw (33.5bhp), with 57.5 Nm of torque and a range of 124 miles.
Don’t get too excited, though, with the UK electric vehicle market in turmoil, it’s unlikely we’ll see any of these in the UK for a good while yet. EV is still big business in the ASEAN marketplace though.
Camera?
If you look closely at the horncasting, you’ll notice a strange black carbuncle; it’s actually a forward-facing built-in camera. The camera is shown on both the JPS and GP E. Hopefully, this will be a standard feature on new models before too long.
Gran Turismo
The Royal Alloy GT range is yet to arrive in Great Britain, but it’ll likely be fairly popular with the average commuter. I’m not too sure about that humungous dashboard though. It’s bigger than the screen in most modern family cars.
