AF Rayspeed’s 6-plate Road clutch is a great bit of kit with a well-proven history but AF have just released their new 8-plate Python clutch (pictured above).

Aside from having an extra two plates, the Python is lighter and stronger than the Road and is said to give great feel at the lever without needing Herculean strength to pull it in. We took a look at it back in August, you can read all about the technical aspects and watch a video of Ben explaining its features here.

Features

  • Cassette style for easy removal/fitting
  • Reduced mass
  • Increased plates
  • Tighter tolerances
  • Needle roller instead of a bush
  • Crownwheel with steel ring gear and CNC, heat treated and hard anodised aluminium basket

Weight comparison

  • Standard 47-tooth GP clutch weighs 1.97kg
  • AF Road 6 plate clutch weighs 1.54kg
  • Python 46-tooth clutch weighs 1.435kg
  • Python 47-tooth clutch weighs 1.488kg

More responsive

A clutch with less weight reduces the inertia of the drivetrain and makes the engine more responsive, it also lowers the load on the gearbox. In theory, the gearbox should have a longer life and is less likely to be damaged by rider error – missed gear changes for instance.

Reigning, two-time BSSO champion, Steve Wright has been race-testing the clutch for AF Rayspeed and his team boss, DSC Racing’s Scotty has been impressed with how it performs on track. Steve has also been very happy with the way it handles the power of his race bike and how the clutch ‘feels’ in use.

Stronger springs?

The Python clutch has a light ‘feel at the lever, if you prefer a heavier clutch (or if you think your motor might need extra help harnessing its power) stronger springs are available. They’re 30% stronger than the standard Python springs. Higher friction Surflex plates can also be fitted, although the bottom two plates will need modifying.

Uni Multi Clutch

If you’re running a GP crankcase cover you can also opt to fit the Uni Multi Clutch to improve feel and bite at the lever (also available from AF).

What do you get in the box?

The Python comes complete and ready to fit with no pre-soaking required. It’s already fitted with a GP top bearing (there’s an Li bearing top included as well). There’s also a thin clutch nut, bevel washer, end plate circlip, a set of wide clutch shims and a clutch holding tool

Price and availability

The Python clutch is in stock now, although AF are waiting for the shims to arrive. Clutches will be ready to go out in the New Year. They’re available in both 47 and 48-tooth versions for £380 and you can find them here. Let AF know that SLUK sent you…
