We all love a wander around a Sunday market, especially if that market is packed out with all kinds of rusty treasures, tat and boxes of stuff you’ll never use or need.
That’s basically what a scooter parts fair is all about and at the Mammoth Parts Fair, held in the pork pie (not pork pie hat) capital of England you had plenty of rusty stuff to choose from.
Early March leaves an outdoor event at the mercy of the weather Gods but the organisers (Scooternova and EMSA) got away fairly lucky with early fog and freezing temperatures. This event is held at the old cattle market and most of the stalls are covered, although still open to the elements and bitterly cold when you’re stood there all day. That didn’t deter the hardy traders, inside or out – nor did it put off too many punters.
‘Bargains’ on Steve Foster’s stall included a microphone stand once used by Neville Staples (apparently), a souvenir from his VFM days no doubt.
Take the lot
Although the hardened bargain hunters got there early, (rumour has it that one of them bought the complete contents of a stall before 9:30 am for £450) I was merely there to have a wander around and see a few people. I was neither buying, nor selling on this occasion. A much nicer way to spend a sociable Sunday.
Bargain hunt
If you wanted to buy a complete scooter, a project, a restoration job or enough separate bits to build a scooter from scratch then you could do from a number of stalls present on the day. As with most scooter stuff though, you’re not getting too many bargains at an event like this, unless you know what you’re looking for.
The place was kept busy throughout the morning and by 11 am the sun was starting to temporarily take the chill off, which gave us a chance to sample a beer or two outside. Catching up with friends, enjoying the banter, listening to scooters pulling up, or riding away for an hour or so.
It gave a bit of hope that spring is finally here and we’ll soon be heading off for another year of two-wheeled fun with like-minded misfits.
Old and the new
Amongst the old and the new many treasures can still be found, like the ever jovial Mr Norrie Kerr. It’s always a pleasure to see him out and about. Always surrounded by a harem of nubile young beauties.
