1985 British Scooter Racing Championships | NOSTALGIA

The scooter racing season is almost upon us for both the BSSO and BSEC; in fact, the BSSO Test Day is happening at Darley Moor this Friday, 20th March and the first Scooter endurance race is next weekend at Whilton Mill.

Col has raided his archives and found some interesting photos from Three Sisters in 1988. There are also some photos from Langbarugh in 1991. I’m sure any scooter endurance racers will recognise that circuit.

Who’s who?

Whilst Col was up in the loft, he also found the ‘Bell Helmets British Road Race Scooter Championship’ results from 1985 (pictured above). Those riders would be getting ready to contest their respective championships 40 years ago and quite a few are getting ready to race again this year.

Amazingly, lots of the names on that entry list will still be familiar to anybody connected with the scooter scene. Have a look down the list, and there are some infamous riders on there. Sadly, there are a few that are no longer with us, but there are also quite a few who are still racing to this day and lots more who you’ll have shared a pint or two with at various rallies.

He’s armless

Rumour has it that the man with the cast on his arm (taken at Three Sisters in 1988) is the former creator of a well-known 1980s scooter magazine, and he currently keeps himself busy organising South West Scooter Club events.

One for the ladies

This very well-known Scotsman needs no introduction; his old Team Vespa scooters are still being ridden at both BSSO and endurance.

In God we trust

Another iconic racer and scooter shop owner. This man has brought us plenty of scooter tuning parts over the years. He’s a religious man and would never race on Sundays. He’s being helped on the tools here by his nephew.

Turbo!

Sadly, this Welsh heartthrob is no longer with us. He was a demon on the track and was usually known as ‘Turbo Terry.’

This DJ didn’t play records

Another irrepressible racer and tuner who is sadly no longer with us. This man lit up the racetracks on his Lambrettas and remained part of the scooter business he had built with his Vespa riding partner until his death in 2015.

Good times
