Scooter sprinting is in the news this week thanks to British rider, Adie Horrocks cracking off a 122.30mph flying run on his BFA 244 Vespa at Elvington over the weekend.
Of course, naturally we think of Germany when it comes to fast Vespas – the Germans and Austrians are Vespa crazy. This weekend they get a chance to flex their muscles at an 1/8-mile sprint meeting hosted by Minusschrauber Rollerklub Bremen.
This meeting is part of the club’s 30th anniversary weekend. Back in the 1990s they used to drag race on public country roads to try and find the ‘fastest in town.’ After a few years of the traditional first weekend in October event they made things a bit more legal by using off-road locations like Rotenburg Airport, or the freight village in Bremen. The club also joined the German DBM classic scooter race championships.
Their last meeting was back in 2017 to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary and the club decided to stop racing after that event. Now five years on, you guessed it! They’re back for a 30th anniversary weekend of racing and an all-nighter. The venue is at an airfield close to the night on Saturday 1st October so if you’re in the area they’ll be pleased to see you. You can find out more here.
Organiser, Michael Widdekind said “We calculate with 60 riders and about 400 people audience, depending on the weather” so it should be worth a trip.
