So, after lots of leaky rumours about a sequel to Quadrophenia some 37 years after the original, news was finally announced at the end of May. Even Toyah wrote on her Facebook feed ‘the cat’s out of the bag’.
The alleged sequel follows the lives of the same characters many years later, by which time Toyah’s character ‘Monkey’ has become a Madam working in the sex industry and involved with her partner (another character from the original film) in social sex. Basically she’s gone from Swinging Sixties to simply Swinging.
Mark Wingett (also lined up for a role in another forthcoming mod-featuring movie Being) rejoins the cast alongside Trevor Laird and original ‘Jimmy’ Phil Daniels.
However, according to a story on the BBC website, both Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have denied involvement, calling the project “a blatant attempt to cash in”.
The Who issued a statement that read, “For the avoidance of doubt, this project isn’t endorsed by The Who, Who Films, Universal or any of the other rights owners of the original.”
So is this new film a sequel or not?
The script is based upon novel To Be Someone by Peter Meadows (worth reading the reviews on Amazon), which was apparently inspired by Quadrophenia and follows the story of Jimmy based on The Who’s album rather than the film. It will be directed by Ray Burdis of ‘The Krays’ fame, and produced by Archangel Productions.
But Bill Curbishley, the band’s manager who produced the original film, said: “Quadrophenia is a significant and influential film based on The Who’s music, not some Carry On franchise.”
He continued, “Any follow up to this film could only be made by the authors of the original and would need to be worthy of the name. This karaoke sequel announced recently in the press would be totally ridiculous.”
Quite where the new film goes from here we don’t know, or indeed how much scooter action will take place in the new movie either.
Perhaps there will be a set of Lambretta keys in the fruitbowl inside the house with the pampas grass in the front garden?
We’ll keep you up to date as the story unfolds on ScooterLab.UK
