Nostalgia is one of the things us scooter riders thrive on, most of us remember the hedonistic 1980s when we were all fresh-faced and would spend every penny on accessories for our scooters (not much has changed 30 years later). One item that Vespa PX riders will remember with rose-tinted specs is the Driver screen. It was and still is the coolest looking screen you can fit to a PX but it wasn’t without its faults. They’ve been remade over the years in various plastics, metal and fibreglass but none of them have managed to improve over the original, even though it was brittle, wobbly and hard to paint. That is until now… Let me introduce the SLUK Driver.
Made in England
Not many things are handcrafted by artisans these days in England but our SLUK Plastics are all 100% made in Leicestershire by our own craftsman, Nigel. He’s recreated the PX Driver as a by-product whilst developing a GTS screen (the GTS one will be ready in a few weeks, followed by the T5). The first production PX SLUK Driver screen was hand finished for us last night, as you can see in the video above.
Nigel talks us through the process and features of the screen but we’ve tried to iron out the problems of the original as we’ve developed it over the last few weeks.
We are just waiting for the stainless steel brackets to arrive and the top screens before production can commence early next week. When I say production, this is a one-man operation done by hand and power tools, these aren’t mass produced by robots in some Chinese factory. Each screen is lovingly created.
For starters the material is much better than the old-fashioned plastic used in the 1980s, ours is high gloss, hard wearing and can be T-Cutted if you scratch it. It can also be sprayed to match your scooter. We’ve improved the fit of the screen by using stainless steel brackets, they’ve been given a ‘twist’ to take out some of the vibration and are slightly thicker. The brackets are slotted as well so you can raise and lower the screen, as well as move it in or out by a few mm around the headlight for the perfect fit. We’ve also made it fit around the PX Disc master cylinder by moulding an inobtrusive bulge, in fact, you can’t really notice it’s there. The screen will fit Disc and Non-Disc EFL PX/T5 Classic and LML Star models.
We’ll be offering the screens is a choice of gloss black, white, silver and carbon effect to begin with.
Drinks tray options
We’ve also recreated the ‘drinks tray’, both as an original style item and as a modern alternative complete with an angled flat surface to fix either a phone or sat nav to. You can use a Ram mount or phone mount, whichever suits your device. Or even Velcro it on. To help keep the price down the drinks tray is available as a separate item, not everybody will want one but they do finish the screen off nicely and add some extra strength and support.
The top screen is tinted and made especially for our SLUK Driver, we will also be doing a direct replacement top screen to fit the original Driver screen in the next few weeks. We’ll also be able to offer the top screen in other tints and colours later on.
It isn’t possible to make the headlight slats using the same process we use to form the screen and the tooling costs make it financially unviable. What we are planning to do though is make a tinted headlight cover as an option, that can be customised using pinstriping tape to give the effect of slats but without them vibrating and dropping out.
Available to pre-order now
