Hot off the press from SIP’s open day for their gigantic new shop are these new tubeless wheels that allow the fitment of fat 11” tyres to the rear of Classic Vespa largeframes (PX, Sprint, Rally etc) and smallframe scooters (Primavera, 50 Special etc).
The new rim is a massive 3.00-inches wide permitting the fat 11-tyres from the modern Vespa Primavera and LX to be fitted to older vespas. The rim has been offset which means the engine casing mounting needs to be cut and the engine spaced over towards the flywheel side to compensate.
The whole point of this conversion is to offer the fat wheel look so popular with the German custom scene in particular. Previously SIP offered a fat 10” rear tubeless wheel for this purpose but the width of the tyre and the shallowness of the well meant that it was difficult to get tyres on and off without damaging the rim. That model has since been deleted. The 11-inch conversion solves this problem because the larger diameter permits a deeper well in the wheel to ease tyre fitting.
The estimated retail price of the 11” conversion wheel is €79 including a spacer for the engine mount. Stock arrival is expected in June. Chrome finish is going to be offered as well as several painted options.
A matching 11” front wheel is also in development. Even with low-profile tyres these rims increase the rolling diameter of the tyre and will thus also increase overall gearing.
We’ll have a full report from SIP’s open day soon.
