SLUK Sena Competition #9 – A34-horror movie video | VIDEO
Contains scenes some Lambretta riders may find offensive
Eden Bakewell gets May’s competition (to win a Sena Prism bluetooth helmet cam) off to a flying start with his video of a blow-out on his highly tuned 240 Lambretta. This was from the era when it was compulsory to video everything using a potato (or at least that’s what the clip looks like it was filmed on).
The incident happened on the A34 dual carriageway heading to IoW when he was 2-up with his wife Paula and luggage for a Bank Holiday weekend rally. They suffered a complete blow-out on one wheel, which was Eden confesses was due to being: “overloaded and going too fast. S1’s had been sitting at around 70mph for over 20 miles. Tyre just exploded.” Both Eden and Paula were left sprawling in the middle of a busy dual carriageway. It was only due to the quick response of the lorry driver following (see the skid marks he left) that it ended with nothing more than a few scuffs to both the scooter and riders.
This video serves as a useful reminder to keep an eye on your tyre pressures, condition and ratings particularly if you are doing high speed riding. Good quality tubeless rims fitted with high-speed rated tyres are the best insurance against this sort of incident. It should be noted that this hasn’t put Eden or Paula off riding Lambrettas over great distances. Far from it. They are both members of the Indecipherables Lambretta Collective who’ve won the LCGB Club award two years on the trot…
