SLUK Loves #4: TCX Vintage Series Hero waterproof boots | REVIEW
TCX are my riding boot brand of choice. I’ve got various pairs; from their excellent baseball style Street boots to their mid-height X-Cube and even a pair of race boots. They’re always comfortable, good-looking, waterproof (if they’re meant to be) and have protection built in. As such I knew these Hero boots would perform just as well as they look.
The Hero boots were added to the TCX line up in early spring and I got a pair as soon as I saw them. They form part of the growing TCX 24/7 Vintage Series, a selection of great quality boots designed to look good both on and off the scooter (or bike). They’re also designed to stand up to the elements and protect our feet.
The Hero boots look as well finished in real life as they did in the photos I’d seen. They also fit perfectly and were comfortable from the first time I put them on. They’re made from full-grain leather; they also have a waterproof liner. They’re reinforced around the toes, heel and malleolus – that’s the easily broken hammer-headed bone on either side of the ankle, although you probably won’t know what it is until you break one. The Hero boots also come with a CE safety certification, always a good thing to have. If you ride bikes as well as scooters they also have a leather shift pad giving extra protection for your gear prodding foot. The sole of the boots has a tread pattern designed to offer superior grip, great for those slippery garage forecourts.
How’s the fit?
I’m a size 9 and TCX boots are as reliable on sizing as a pair of Adidas trainers. I don’t even feel the need to try them on beforehand, so buying online isn’t a major concern if you haven’t got a local TCX stockist. As I said, these boots were comfortable from the word go. They’re easy to get on and off as well thanks to the side zipper, which is covered by a leather Velcro secured flap. Much easier than trying to get a pair of soggy Dr Martens, or ordinary boots on and off in a hurry. They’re also laced for the perfect fit. Walking around in ‘ordinary’ bike boots can make you look like you work for the Ministry of Funny Walks but these just feel like a nice comfortable pair of boots. They don’t look like you’ve just stepped off a scooter either; you could walk around in these with a pair of jeans on and look quite smart. Perfect for those trips where luggage space is an issue and you need a multi-functional wardrobe.
Are they waterproof?
It’s not often with bike kit that ‘waterproof’ on a label means it is actually waterproof but with the four different styles of TCX boots I own I can honestly say they keep my feet dry. These Hero boots have seen a fair few long distance very wet rides; they do exactly what it says in the spec.
The recommended retail price for the boots is £169.99 so they’re not as cheap as the £129.99 Spada Pilgrim Grande boots Sticky reviewed here but personally I think the TCX styling, materials and finish are worth the extra money. Like any good quality leather footwear they’ll only improve with age.
