We all know what to expect when we stop at motorway services, yes that’s right expensive food, expensive fuel and often a busy stressful experience. Often when we’re travelling to far off rallies or even heading off on holiday we’re time-bound and travelling on, or stopping on the motorway for fuel/rest/refreshments is unavoidable. Especially on a scooter when tank range is limited.
Unavoidable or not, we can always escape the clutches of the highway robbers by exiting at a junction and riding around aimlessly until we find a garage/pub etc. A recent report found that petrol is as much as 37p a litre more expensive on the motorway and some fast food outlets were charging more than twice the price for the exact same meal on the motorway when compared to their usual restaurants so it can be worth making the effort.
Another option is to do things the modern way by using websites and apps dedicated to finding alternatives. Here’s a couple that are well worth a look…
Just off Junction
We recently came across this handy website – Just off Junction. It gives you a quick and easy way to find alternatives to those over-inflated motorway services. It’s a free website and you simply choose the motorway, pick a junction and select a service.
You can choose various options, from fuel to places to eat, hotels, entertainment, garages etc. The listings are for places up to five minutes away from the junction, so if you fancy a pub lunch halfway down the M5 you can pick a junction and know where the nearest Brewers Fair is and if there’s a fuel station close by as well. The website is free and businesses can ask to have their services registered for free so it’s impartial.
The second service is a free app called ‘Next Junction’
Simply download it using the App Store or Google Play and it’ll direct you to places close to you. Allow location services and it’ll show your location in real-time and what’s available at the next junction. It’s very simple to use and accurate.
Give it a try the next time you’re on a long motorway journey. If it saves you a few quid you can thank SLUK for that.
