Alpinestars Quick Seal Out

How better to test the benefits of Alpinestars fast-fit 2-piece oversuit than to pit it against our friend Tuzwalski Turrell; the world’s most powerful pisser.

The Quick Seal-out suit needs very little in the way of introduction. It is a thin, very compact jacket and trouser combo that’s proved itself endlessly over the years. You’ll find thousands of independent user reviews giving scores of 4.9/5 as well as recommended tags from other bike press outlets. What more can we say?

Well, the headline advantage is best displayed by our video. The large flared leg is not only ideal for raves with a ’70s disco theme, but it means you can put the suit on without removing your boots. A simple Velcro seal on the leg means that you don’t have to look like a flared member of the Chi-Lites while riding.

Another less-obvious bonus feature is the material’s breathability. Most cheaper thin waterproofs leave you sweatier than a Sumo wrestler’s butt-crack. With non-breathable waterproofs you can end up with wind-chill simply from perspiration. Alpinestars Quick Seal Out are a vast improvement; though I’ve yet to find any breathable material that is entirely sweat-proof.

The jacket features a Velcro-seal double storm flap that can be a pain. If you are in a hurry it can get caught in the zip, but once fastened correctly the jacket simply works. The trousers are high waisted and the elasticated coat comes low to provide a good seal. Maybe not as good as one-piece waterproofs, but certainly better for accessing your wallet or keys.

I’ve taken to carrying a set of these to put on over my main textile riding gear. No matter how good a job your textiles do in keeping the rain out during a ride, if they get wet then they nearly always absorb some water. That will make them damp to wear on the ride home; often at the cuffs. If you use a second set, like Quick Seal Out, over the top then at least your main jacket remains dry enough to wear when you arrive, and also on the way home. Life is better.
