Swedish suspension gurus, Öhlins have released pricing and more information on their newly developed Vespa suspension. The range will cover the GTS, Sprint and Primavera models, both front and rear. The STX 36 shocks will be available in the UK and across Europe in late spring (no pun intended).
The high-pressure gas front ‘piggyback’ STX 36 features an external reservoir and is adjustable for preload, whilst the rear emulsion type rear shock absorbers also have adjustable spring preload to allow you to set the suspension for the rider’s weight (and that of a pillion/luggage when required. Strangely the adjuster ring is on the top of the rear shocks but should be fairly easy to access from under the seat bucket. It will no doubt be easier to adjust than standard GTS rear shocks.
We asked Öhlins why there’s no rebound adjustment, as found on many quality aftermarket shocks. A spokesman said “I think the idea behind the design was to have a simple, balanced and cost-efficient shock without the need of a rebound adjuster.”
With Öhlins you can be sure that ride quality will be improved after fitting a set of these, as will your street cred.
Price and availability
Öhlins don’t come cheap unfortunately, the front (PI 901) costs £711.60 and the twin rear (PI 902) £543.15. They will be available from all good scooter shops/Öhlins stockists and probably through the SLUK Shop as well.
