Who: London Lambretta Club
What: Confusion
Where: Duren, Germany
When: 1999
Why: Hungover stupidity – Or Go the whole hog and travel old school

There is something that really dates this photo of me and my mates at the German Euro Lambretta Rally located in Duren 1999. It’s not my lush curtains centre parting hairstyle, nor Vic’s fine dark locks but a paper map? WTF as da kids would say today.

This year for a real sense of nostalgia when riding your scooter to a rally, go proper old school and plan your route on a paper map. Pore over it for days on end before your departure, making notes and abbreviated directions to ‘gaffer tape’ onto your headset top. Ensure you encompass the note in a clear sandwich bag first, otherwise at the first sign of precipitation these notes will soon resemble a zebra at full spin in a washing machine. Hold that thought….. On the other hand you could just commit your route to memory, logging the major towns and road numbers in your grey matter unless – let’s face it at your age – the memory ain’t what it used to be. I recall back in the heady scooter boy days of the 80s, some would need nothing more than a Happy Eater roadside restaurant map and the pure enthusiasm of spending your weeks apprentice’s wages on fuel and booze…. Oh and burgers that resembled the sole of my grandad’s house slippers.

So I urge you to seek out the full nostalgic experience on our vintage shopping bikes this year. Or bugger that and punch in the post code on your satnav and arrive at least 5 hours before the 1980’s, capturing your experience on 1080HD action-cam to enter into Scooter Lab’s video competition in VIBE. Moment in Time

Have you got a photo that tells a story? The only rule is that it must be an evocative photo preferably depicting at least one scooter. Why not send it to ScooterLab with around 300 words to explain the story behind the image. We’ll use the best ones in our Vibe section each week. Send to editorial@ScooterLab.UK
