Long-distance UK rider needs ‘help’ in the USA | NEWS
We’ve featured various long distance scooter rides on SLUK, including a few previous arse-numbing non-stop rides by Stephen Cooper. Last year whilst trying to break his own record, he hit a deer carcass in the middle of the night in the pitch black and called that particular attempt off at 849 miles. Not bad for a day’s work, so near and venison so far.
Stephen also did 2162 miles in heavy rain on a Kymco Downtown 300 from Calais to Valencia and back in just 52 hours. He’s ridden a Vespa GTS across Texas whilst wearing a kilt (for a bet) and he’s also completed the Scooter Cannonball, covering 3,000 miles in 10 days. He’s ridden 1500 miles non-stop in 32 hours and also ridden from Calais to Berlin and back again – 1215 miles in 21 and a half hours.
The man is a bonafide lunatic. If you’ve watched Ricky Gervais’ After Life series, Stephen’s exploits will probably remind you of the local nutter who desperately wants to get in the local newspaper.
USA Coast to Coast ride
This summer Stephen is heading back to America and plans to ride coast to coast across the middle of the country as quickly as possible. By his own admission, he’s not much of a tourist
Stephen’s planned 3000-mile route will take in: New Jersey, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. The only snag is he currently has nothing to ride. He had planned to buy something in the States, use it for the ride and then sell it afterwards but the red tape involved has kyboshed that plan.
Stephen told us “In December 2018 I grabbed a rental car from Washington DC and went looking for a quick and efficient route across the USA that would eventually end in LA so I could ride it without too much planning in 2019. As I’m not a very good tourist, the route had to be quick enough to cover between 300 to 700 miles a day and not stray much from the major highways.”
Simply banging in the miles to get the job done gets a far higher rating to me than pointing at historic stuff. I want it to be a proper endurance ride, not a vacation.”
Can you help or sponsor this nutter?
Stephen needs help (aside from psychiatric)
He’s flying into New Jersey in late June and flies back out of LA 14 days later. he’s looking for somebody, (preferably a scooter importer or shop) to lend him a scooter, preferably a 250-300cc machine that is capable of some serious hammer.
You’ll gain some SLUK publicity from the stunt and if he’s lucky Stephen might even make the front page of the local paper… if he survives.
If you can help, or if you’re a long-distance psychiatrist you can
