Sharp-eyed SLUK readers will probably recognise the image above as a motorcycle. It’s not just ‘any old motorcycle though. This is a brand new 2021 British hand-built Langen 2-stroke. A 75bhp V-twin that revs to 14,000rpm. It boasts direct oil injection and more importantly it’s just gained Euro 5 so can be sold and legally ridden on the roads of Great Britain (or the rest of Europe).
We first brought you details of the Italian Vins engine that powers it after the EICMA show in 2019. The Langen is an exquisite piece of mobile art, crafted by former CCM Chief Design Engineer, Christofer Ratcliffe. It’s very light, weighing in at just 114kg, which gives it a very impressive 660bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio. The weight is saved thanks to the use of a carefully crafted aluminium space frame, hand-laid carbon fibre tank and bodywork. The bike is dripping in designer names, including Ohlins forks, K-Tech twin rear shocks, and Hel radial calipers. Gold leafing is used to detail the bodywork.
As you can imagine, this isn’t a bike churned out by the 1000. Langen will produce just 100 of these stunning machines.
The man behind the machine, Christofer said “My dream has always been to create a small piece of British motorcycling history. To be able to launch this special motorcycle under a completely new brand really is a hugely rewarding realisation of this dream. I just want to create some interesting bikes and my aim is to continue to push boundaries, which I hope will really please people.”
Christofer added: “Judging by the hugely positive response to the new Langen Two Stroke at Blenheim Palace, included more initial pre-orders than I was expecting, my desire to produce motorcycles with a simplicity and purity of days gone by seems to be shared by countless other bike enthusiasts who really seem to savour the amazing sounds and smells of our new Two Stroke.” He concluded: “For me, with all these electric bikes now launching, the first Langen is a final swansong for the two-stroke; an intriguing modern twist on a proud performance café racer tradition.”
Scooter riders are keeping the flame alive
Us classic two-stroke scooter addicts are quite fortunate. We’ve stuck with the characteristic excitement of highly-strung strokers, whilst the rest of the two-wheeled world has moved on to the more mundane but easier to live with 4-stroke. Scooter tuners and developers have continued to push the boundaries of our small wheels to new limits, with ever-quicker motors, higher capacities and power levels more akin to a quarter litre two-stroke bike of the past. We’ve carried on with that two-stroke buzz, the sound, the smell, the character and the euphoric feeling as a tuned engine comes alive beneath you, reaching that magic place in the rev range where reality begins to blur and the world is at peace around you.
Vins and Langen have shown the big boys that a clean-burning, emission friendly powerful two-stroke is still achievable and for that we salute them. This bike will no doubt become the collectors item it deserves to be. Started up for specially permitted parade laps at festivals of the future. A chance for people to reminisce on days gone by and simple technology bringing immense pleasures that most people will never have experienced. Long live the two stroke.
Own your own piece of history
The Langen costs £28,000 plus VAT, a £1000 deposit secures your bike. Ok, who will be the first scooterist to buy one and stick the engine in a knackered old Lambretta frame?
